Neighbours, peers and educational achievement
We are delighted to welcome Professor Stephen Gibbons to the SMF on 22nd May from 12.30 to 13.30.
It is a commonly held view that a child’s education is sensitive to the influence of the friends, school mates, neighbours and others that they interact with. But how big are these effects relative to other influences – such as individual ability, family background, teacher quality and school resources? At this Chalk + Talk Professor Stephen Gibbons, LSE, summarises recent quantitative research on these issues and argues that the evidence suggests that the effects of these ‘social interactions’ on achievements are generally relatively small.
