Post Election 2015: A Second Helping – Digesting the Conservative Manifesto

We are hosting an event where we hope to begin to digest the Conservative commitments for government in more detail.

This follows our popular and lively lunch time series of events where we analysed the various party manifestos, examining the policy commitments, what they tell us about the vision of the party and whether or not they are deliverable.

It’s the result that few people predicted. The Conservative Party has formed a majority government. Our original post-election event was planned to look at any coalition agreement that had emerged by this week. Instead we will be taking a second and closer look at the policy commitments in the Conservative manifesto.

Date and time:
Thursday 14 May 2015,12.30 – 13.30
Lunch will be served from 12.00

Location:
Social Market Foundation, 11 Tufton Street, London, SW1P 3QB

Speakers:
Professor Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University and author of The Conservative Party: From Thatcher to Cameron
Philip Collins, The Times
Miranda Green, Newsweek

Chair: Emran Mian, Director of the Social Market Foundation

“Our manifesto is a manifesto for working people and as a majority government we will be able to deliver all of it.”
David Cameron, May 2015

Key questions for the event:

  • Which commitments from the Conservative manifesto are they now likely to prioritise? What clues do the Cabinet appointments provide?
  • Which promises might the Party come to regret? What, if anything, might be quietly dropped?
  • What are the issues on which Conservative backbenchers or opposition parties might have the strongest voice?
