The Government is committed to reducing the number of people claiming out of work benefits and sees the recent and ongoing employment support reforms as playing an important part in this. As the House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee continued its inquiry into the future of the Jobcentre Plus this seminar drew on international experiences to explore what makes an effective public employment service.
Professor Dan Finn drew on comparative policy reviews of public employment services in North America and the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark to explore key issues, including:
- The role that local government and the private sector should play;
- The extent to which devolution of funding for benefits and/or services can be effective;
- How the approach could be varied to meet the needs of those with a disability or health condition.
