UK government should issue new “sustainability-linked bonds” showing a commitment to net zero, think tank says

• New Social Market Foundation report calls on Rishi Sunak to issue “sustainability-linked” bonds, which would pay out more to investors if the government does not meet its targets on decarbonising the British economy.

• Chile recently became the first country in the world to issue such a bond. The UK should follow suit and aim to be the world leader in sustainability-linked finance.

• Green finance represents a significant economic opportunity for Britain. The SMF estimates that 200,000 jobs in finance & insurance are already “green jobs”. Low carbon finance is expected to grow more rapidly than any other green sector of the economy.
