Alex is a solicitor at AWO, a law firm and consultancy, delivering advisory and contentious work related to data rights and issues around modern technology.
Prior to joining AWO, Alex was Chief Operating Officer of the UK Government’s Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, where he set the organisation’s strategy and helped influence significant policy developments in AI ethics. He also established a team focused on understanding public attitudes to the use of artificial intelligence. He had previously been thrown into the deep end of data rights, joining London-based insure-tech startup Brolly as Chief Operating Officer in the year leading up to the introduction of the GDPR, ensuring regulatory compliance in the context of an innovative, data-focused business model.
Earlier in his career Alex worked as a litigator at Linklaters LLP. He also spent four years working in international development in Kenya, Brussels and New York, focussing on strategy and evaluation for counter-extremism projects. During this time he also carried out pro bono legal work supporting claimants in land rights cases in East Africa.
